After seizing the Zulu chieftaincy from his half-brother in 1816, he reorganized his forces and waged war against the Nguni clans in SE Africa, subjugating them and forming a Zulu empire in the region. Shaka’s military campaigns led to a huge displacement of people and a lengthy spell of clan warfare in the early 1820s. He was subsequently assassinated by his two half-brothers.
