One of a group of complex DNA-containing viruses causing infections in humans and most other vertebrates that tend to recur. The group includes herpes simplex, the agent of cold sores; herpes varicella/zoster, the virus causing chickenpox and shingles; Epstein–Barr (EB) virus, the causal agent of glandular fever and also implicated in the cancer Burkitt’s lymphoma; and the cytomegalovirus.
