A medium-sized bird of prey (family Accipitridae) renowned for its keen eyesight that inhabits woodland where it perches in a concealed place, emerging to hunt passing prey by fast pursuit. There are several species, varying in size, found worldwide. In North America, sturdy, broad-winged birds known elsewhere as buzzards are called hawks. They seek prey by soaring over open ground and swooping on to it.
