A type of galaxy with abnormally strong emission in the blue and violet region of the spectrum. Galaxies of this type were discovered in 1956 by the Mexican astronomer Guillermo Haro (1913–88). They are often elliptical or lenticular galaxies with strong emission lines. The emission may be from an active galactic nucleus, or from a burst of star formation. Haro galaxies are similar to Markarian galaxies.
