A mission that was launched from the Tanegashima Space Center on 14 September 2007 by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, that obtained data on the origin and evolution of the Moon and developed technologies needed for future lunar exploration. Its name is derived from SELenological Engineering Explorer. SELENE orbited at about 100 km and released two small satellites into polar orbits, Okina and Ouna, which entered elliptical orbits at 100 × 2400 km and 100 × 800 km, respectively. The main orbiter was manoeuvred into a controlled crash into the Moon on 11 June 2009.
