specializing in non-parametric statistics (see non-parametric test). In 1974 Hall graduated in mathematical statistics from U Sydney, and in 1976 he obtained both an MSc from ANU and a PhD (supervised by Kingman) from U Oxford. He held posts at ANU and U Melbourne. He was elected a Fellow of the AAS in 1987, and FRS in 2001. He was awarded the Pitman Medal (see Pitman) of the SSAI in 1990, and the Hannan Medal of the AAS in 1994. He was President of the Bernoulli Society in 2001, the IMS Wald Lecturer in 2006, and the ASA Wilks Award winner in 2012. He was named as an officer of the Order of Australia in 2013.
