The substance secreted by sebaceous glands onto the surface of the skin. It is a complex mixture of lipids, including fatty acids and cholesterol, that protects, lubricates, and waterproofs the skin and hair and helps prevent desiccation. It is colonized by certain bacteria, notably Propionibacterium acnes, which may serve an immune function.
