An arachnid (class Arachnida) that has eight legs, a pair of pedipalps resembling crab claws and used for grasping, and a segmented tail, ending in a stinger, that is usually carried curved over the back. The sting is painful but rarely harmful to humans. There are 13 families and about 1750 known species, found worldwide except for Antarctica.
