A long-period comet discovered independently on 1995 July 23 by the American amateur astronomers Alan Hale (1958– ) and Thomas Joel Bopp (1949–2018). At that stage it was still over 7 au from the Sun. It was noted for a series of jets and shells of dust thrown off by the 60-km-wide nucleus as it rotated in a period of 11.3 hours. The comet reached perigee, 1.32 au, on 1997 March 22, and perihelion, 0.91 au, on 1997 April 1. Its maximum magnitude was about −0.5. The gas tail extended to 20° and the dust tail to 25°, corresponding to actual lengths of over 1 au. Its orbit has a period of about 2500 years, eccentricity 0.995, and inclination 89°.4.
