A stout beetle belonging to a large family (Scarabaeidae) whose members are highly diverse in size and habitat. Many have bright metallic colours, they are 1.5–160 mm long, their antennae consist of movable flattened plates they can open into a fan or close into a club-shape, and many have strong front legs adapted for digging. Larvae are C-shaped, white or yellow grubs. The family includes dung beetles, chafers, Goliath beetles, Hercules beetles, etc. Scarabaeus sacer is the dung beetle that was sacred in Ancient Egypt. There are more than 30,000 species found worldwide.
