1. (rectilinear scanner) A device that visualizes the distribution of a radioactive compound in a particular system, usually the human body. The scanner consists of a scintillation crystal, photomultiplier tube, and amplifying circuits. The crystal is collimated, so that only the radiation from a small area is received at any given instant, and driven backwards and forwards to produce a rectilinear scan of the area investigated. Double-headed scanners have been developed in which the output is the sum of the outputs of two crystals that simultaneously scan the area of interest. Anomalies arising from a source deep within a human body are minimized by this technique.
