A struggle between Denmark and Sweden for the latter’s southernmost province of Scania. For centuries it was controlled by Denmark but was gained by Charles X of Sweden at the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. Christian V of Denmark invaded Scania and was welcomed by the population. Charles XI of Sweden fought back in a harsh campaign and finally won a pitched battle at Lund (3 December 1676); the victory was acknowledged in the Treaty of Lund (1679), and Scania was ceded to Sweden.
