Greenhouse was educated at City College (now City U) of New York, gaining his BS in mathematics in 1938. On graduating he joined the Bureau of Census, working with Deming. After serving in the army during the war, Greenhouse was recruited, in 1948, to be an inaugural member (with Mantel) of the first biometry group in the National Cancer Institute. His subsequent career took him through the leadership of several sections of the National Institute of Health (NIH). At the same time, from 1946 he had been a part-time faculty member at GWU, where he also studied under Kullback for his PhD. On his retirement from NIH in 1974 (as an Associate Director), he took a full-time post at GWU, retiring in 1988.
