The act of a spacecraft that rendezvous with an orbiting satellite to capture it for maintenance and repairs before returning it to orbit. This function is performed by the space shuttle; the first retrieval and deployment was done by Discovery launched on 12 April 1985. Satellites are often captured by astronauts during an extravehicular activity and manoeuvred into the shuttle's cargo bay. They can be worked on there and redeployed or transported back to Earth and later relaunched.
