单词 Gravity Probe B
释义
Gravity Probe B

Astronomy
  • A NASA satellite launched into polar orbit in 2004 April which carried four precisely aligned gyroscopes to test two predictions about gravity made by the general theory of relativity. Slight changes in the rotation axes of the gyroscopes will reveal how space and time are warped by the mass of the Earth, and how the Earth’s rotation drags spacetime around with it (an effect known as frame dragging). It ceased operation in 2005 September.

Space Exploration
  • A satellite launched by NASA on 20 April 2004 to test German-born US physicist Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity. Developed by physicists and engineers at NASA and Stanford University, California, the probe measured minute changes in the direction of spin of four gyroscopes carried on board and confirmed two key predictions derived from Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity: that Earth warps space and time and that its rotation pulls space-time around with it. The mission ended one-and-a-half years later in 2005.
