A strongly fortified village (pa) in New Zealand defended by the Maori chief Kawiti, an ally of Hone Heke, who, in 1844–45, challenged European sovereignty. The pa was attacked by about 1000 British troops, with artillery, and 500 Maori allies of the British. Kawiti and his people abandoned it, with few casualties, after about 24 hours’ fighting.
