On 20 February 1962, he became the first American to orbit the Earth in the Mercury capsule Friendship 7. On 29 October 1998 he flew as a payload specialist on the Discovery Space Shuttle mission, at age 77 the oldest person ever to fly in space. Glenn also served as a US senator.
