He logged 1 611 hours in space on his five space-shuttle flights. He was crew commander of the Discovery mission in May 1999 that delivered supplies to the International Space Station (ISS); and of the Endeavour mission in April–May 2001 that installed Canadarm 2 on the ISS. He went on to become chief of the Astronaut Office at the Johnson Space Center. Rominger was selected as an astronaut in 1992.
