A point counting technique that is used to measure statistically the components of a sedimentary rock, usually sandstone, using a randomly selected thin section and a device that randomly selects a minimum 300 and preferably 500 points on the slide. For each point the investigator must then determine the type of material at that point. The resulting counts are converted to percentages that can be used in comparisons between samples.
