Following the example of the nobility at the time of the French Revolution (1789), members of legislative assemblies holding authoritarian, anti-democratic, or anti-socialist views have tended to sit on the right of their chambers. As with Left, the meaning of “Right” varies with context, denoting at different times conservative, liberal, or even fascist outlooks. Recent trends have been called the New Right.
