An electron tube that contains a gas or vapour, such as mercury vapour, in sufficient quantity so that the electrical characteristics of the tube are determined entirely by the gas, once ionization has taken place. Gas-discharge tubes are one type of gas-filled tube. Gas-filled tubes that operate by virtue of the ionization produced in them when charged particles pass through them are used as detectors of ionizing radiation, examples being the ionization chamber and Geiger counter.
