The factor by which a signal is amplified, often expressed in decibels (symbol dB). The gain of an antenna is a measure of how directional it is, and is related to directivity. It is equal to the signal strength in the direction of maximum sensitivity divided by the signal strength that would be received, either by an antenna equally sensitive in all directions, or (in an alternative definition) by a half-wave dipole.

In a power amplifier the gain is the ratio of the power output by the amplifier to the power input to it. For a voltage amplifier that supplies relatively little power to the load, the gain is the ratio of the voltage developed across a specified load impedance to the input voltage. For a directional antenna the gain is the ratio of voltage generated in the direction of maximum sensitivity to that produced by the same signal in an omnidirectional antenna. Gain is often measured in decibels.
