Vent in a volcanically active area that emits steam, gas (SO₂, CO₂, etc.), or other volatile constituents at high temperatures (from 100  °C to 1000  °C). The fumarolic condition has been thought to indicate a late stage in volcanic activity, but may actually precede volcanic eruptions, e.g. Mt St Helens, Cascade Range, Washington, in 1980.
