单词 frost hollow
释义
frost hollow

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • Area (e.g. a valley bottom or a smaller hollow) that is very liable to severe and frequent frosts as a result of dense, cold air moving downslope (katabatic flow) and collecting there under conditions of radiation cooling (e.g. at night).

Geography
  • A concentration of cold air in a hollow or valley floor when night-time terrestrial radiation is greatest on valley slopes. Air over these slopes becomes colder, and hence denser, and flows downslope. Temperatures in frost hollows can be tens of degrees colder than the surroundings. See Gustavsson et al. (1998) J. Appl. Met. 37, 6.
