单词 regional policy
释义
regional policy

Geography
  • A policy, adopted by government, aimed at redressing uneven development within a country. Pritchard (2005) Geog. Res. 43, 1 argues that the neoliberal approach to regional policy ‘advances a relatively simplified conception of regional economic and social life that pays little regard to their richness, complexity and grounded realities’. Gleeson (2003) Austral. Geog. Studs 41, 3 critically analyses the European Union’s regional policy framework, particularly the advocacy of ‘economic normalization’ as a leading aim. ‘While regional policy traditionally draws upon regional assets to produce competitiveness, the value of this becomes questionable in the era of globalization’ (Bathelt (2006) PHG 30, 2).

Economics
  • Policies concerning the distribution of income and employment between different geographical regions of a country, or in the case of the European Union, a group of countries. Regional policies usually seek to bring regions with exceptionally low per capita incomes up towards the national average, and to lower the unemployment rates of regions with exceptionally high unemployment. They may also be concerned with relieving the social problems and congestion caused by over-concentration of activities in the most crowded regions. Regional policy works by seeking to direct both private and public sector investment into the more depressed regions. This may be done both by the direct use of government funds, and by tax concessions to encourage private investment in peripheral regions.
