The return of a spacecraft into the Earth's atmosphere. The narrow re-entry corridor is the safe path a spacecraft must follow, since too steep a re-entry, exceeding the undershoot boundary, would burn up the vehicle, whereas a too-shallow angle, above the overshoot boundary, would send it back into space again. An ablation shield is used to protect a spacecraft from destruction by the intense re-entry friction heat.
