The simplification of the interpretation of magnetic anomalies by modifying the anomaly pattern to that which it would be in a vertical field, i.e. if the locality were at the north (or south) magnetic pole; induced magnetic effects would then be symmetrical. The anomaly is directly analogous to that of a gravity anomaly (in which the gravitational force is also vertical).
