  • 1. (in optics) Any point in an optical system through or towards which rays of light are converged. It is sometimes called the focal point and sometimes loosely used to mean principal focus or (particularly by photographers) focal length.

    2. (in mathematics) See conic; ellipse.

  • The plural is ‘foci’ and the adjective is ‘focal’. See conic, ellipse, hyperbola, parabola.


Space Exploration
  • Either of two points lying on the major axis of an elliptical orbit on either side of the centre. One focus marks the centre of mass of the system and the other is empty. In a circular orbit the two foci coincide at the centre of the circle and in a parabolic orbit the second focus lies at infinity. See kepler's laws.
