A complex grouping of asteroids near the inner edge of the main asteroid belt, at a mean distance of 2.2 au from the Sun and with a mean orbital inclination of about 5°. The group is separated from the main belt by one of the Kirkwood gaps, and the region is sometimes divided into several separate families. Of these, the members of the so-called Flora family may have originated from the break-up of a single object, the largest remaining fragment being (8) Flora itself, diameter 136 km. Flora is an S-type asteroid, discovered in 1847 by the English astronomer John Russell Hind (1823–95). Flora’s orbit has a semimajor axis of 2.20 au, period 3.27 years, perihelion 1.86 au, aphelion 2.55 au, and inclination 5°.9.
