A large black or mainly black bird that is the largest member of the crow genus Corvus (family Corvidae). Ravens are highly intelligent, omnivorous opportunists, able to solve problems, to communicate to each other about events or objects that are out of sight, and to play. The common raven (C. corax) occurs throughout most of the northern hemisphere, and there are eight other species.
