单词 radio
释义
radio

Physics
  • A means of transmitting information in which the transmission medium consists of electromagnetic radiation. Information is transmitted by means of the modulation of a carrier wave in a transmitter; the modulated carrier wave is fed to a transmitting aerial from which it is broadcast through the atmosphere or through space. A receiving aerial forms part of a resonant circuit, which can be tuned to the frequency of the carrier wave, enabling the receiver that it feeds selectively to amplify and then to demodulate the transmitted signal. A replica of the original information is thus produced by the receiver. See also radio transmission.

Electronics and Electrical Engineering
  • 1. The use of electromagnetic radiation of frequency within the radiofrequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (see frequency band) for the transmission and reception of electrical impulses or signals without connecting wires or waveguides. It is also the process of transmitting or receiving such signals.

The unqualified term usually denotes the telecommunication system that transmits audio information. Any communication channel, circuit, or link in which information is transmitted by radio is described as a radiocommunication or radio channel, radio circuit, or radio link.

    2. Short for radiofrequency. Denoting electromagnetic radiation in the radiofrequency range or any device, component, or other apparatus used to transmit or receive information at frequencies within this range, as in radio telephony, radio telemetry, or radio astronomy.

    3. A radio receiver.
