The energy that is radiated by all warm or hot bodies. It belongs to the infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum and causes heating when absorbed. Radiant heat is invisible and should not be confused with the red glow associated with very hot objects, which belongs to the visible part of the spectrum.
Infrared radiation can travel through a vacuum and it is in this form that the radiant heat of the Sun travels through space. It is the trapping of this radiation by carbon dioxide and water vapour in the atmosphere that gives rise to the greenhouse effect.
