A diode in which very little carrier storage occurs and that may therefore be used to give an ultrahigh speed of operation. Fast-recovery diodes may be formed as p-n junction diodes fabricated from a semiconductor in which the minority-carrier lifetimes are very small. Fast-recovery diodes may also be formed from Schottky diodes. The carrier storage in a Schottky diode is negligible as they are majority-carrier devices, and a similar speed of operation is achieved. Compare step-recovery diode.
