King of Egypt (1936–52). On assuming power he dismissed Prime Minister Nahas Pasha, but was forced by the British government to reinstate him. Farouk’s defeat in the Arab–Israeli conflict of 1948, together with the general corruption of his reign, led to a military coup in 1952, headed by General Neguib (1901–84) and masterminded by Nasser. Farouk was forced to abdicate in favour of his infant son, Fuad; he was sent into exile and eventually became a citizen of Monaco.
