The application of quantum mechanics to geochemistry. This includes calculations of the structure and bonding of minerals and working out phase diagrams of interest in geochemistry. In particular, quantum-mechanical calculations are very useful for describing the effects of the very high temperatures and pressures inside the earth – which are not directly accessible and cannot be readily reproduced in a laboratory. In addition, quantum-mechanical calculations have been used to describe chemical reactions inside the earth.
