A small, pelagic seabird of the auk family (Alcidae), up to about 40 cm long, that has a large, triangular bill which is brightly coloured during the mating season. It is black and white and stocky, with short wings that it moves very rapidly when flying. It nests in burrows on coasts, feeds on fish and other small marine animals, and occurs around North Atlantic and North Pacific coasts. There are three species in the genus Fratercula: Atlantic (F. arctica), horned (F. corniculata), and tufted (F. cirrhata) puffin.
