单词 ExoMars
释义
ExoMars

Astronomy
  • A joint programme between ESA and the Russian Federal Space Agency, Roscosmos, to send two missions to Mars. The first was launched in 2016 March and arrived in 2016 October. It consisted of the Trace Gas Orbiter to search for atmospheric trace gases such as methane, plus a simple lander named Schiaparelli which failed. The second mission, planned for launch in 2022, will consist of a European rover called Rosalind Franklin to search for signs of past and present life and a Russian surface station, Kazachok, to study the local environment.

Space Exploration
  • A European Space Agency (ESA) Mars probe to investigate the Martian environment and demonstrate new technologies that will pave the way for a future Mars sample return mission in the 2020s. A joint endeavour between the ESA and ROSCOSMOS, the current mission (the first significant one of the Aurora programme) consists of a Trace Gas Orbiter and a Schiaparelli landing demonstrator. ExoMars was launched on 14 March 2016 atop a Proton launch vehicle from Baikonur Cosmodrome. Three days before reaching the atmosphere of Mars on 16 October 2016, the Orbiter released Schiaparelli towards the surface of Mars, but a navigation systems anomaly caused the demonstrator to perform its landing sequence prematurely, resulting in a crash. The Trace Gas Orbiter arrived at Mars on 19 October and tested its suite of instruments in orbit for the first time a month later. In early March 2017, the Orbiter successfully performed another series of tests from a different orbit, which included checking procedures associated with taking images and collecting data on the planet’s atmosphere. Full operations began at the end of 2017. In April 2018 ExoMars had lowered itself into a planet-hugging orbit, began sniffing the Red Planet for methane, and returned its first images. By November 2018, it had studied the characteristic of a global dust storm, determined that astronauts on a mission to Mars would be exposed to at least 60% of the total radiation dose limit recommended for their career during the journey itself to and from the Red Planet, and helped ESA scientists selct Oxia Planum as a landing site for its forthcoming ExoMars rover (as of February 2019 named Rosalind Franklin in honour of the scientist behind the discovery of the structure of DNA).
