A consortium of radio observatories established in Europe in 1980 but now expanded worldwide, giving baselines of over 9000 km. It is the most sensitive VLBI array in the world and currently consists of over 20 individual radio telescopes in more than a dozen countries: China (Sheshan 65-m and 25-m, Urumqi 25-m); Finland (Metsähovi 14-m); Germany (Effelsberg 100-m and Wettzell 20-m); Italy (Medicina 32-m, Noto 32-m, and Sardinia 64-m); Korea (21-m dishes at Yonsei, Ulsan, and Tamna); Netherlands (Westerbork array); Poland (Torun 32-m); Russia (32-m dishes at Svetloe, Zelenchukskaya, and Badary); South Africa (Hartebeesthoek 26-m); Spain (Yebes 40-m and 14-m); Sweden (Onsala 25-m and 20-m); UK (Jodrell Bank 76-m and 25-m, and Cambridge 32-m); and the USA (Arecibo 305-m).
