China’s piloted space-flight programme, formally accepted by China’s president Jiang Zemin on 21 September 1992. Project 921 has three phases: Phase I, to launch a manned mission by 2002; Phase II, to launch a temporary space laboratory by 2007; and Phase III, to launch a permanent space station. Phase I concluded in 2005 with the manned Shenzhou 6. Phase II began with the launch of Shenzhou 7 in 2008, and continued with Tiangong 1 (2010), Shenzhou 8–10 (2011-2013), and Tiangong 2 and Shenzhou 11 (2016). It concluded in September 2017 with the end of an unmanned cargo resupply mission. Phase III will provide a large, permanent space station, expected to be fully operational by 2022.
