A German pioneer of aerodynamics; after gaining his PhD at the University of Munich, he was appointed professor of mechanics at the University of Hanover, and was professor of applied mechanics from 1904 to 1953 at the University of Göttingen. He taught and carried out research in fluid mechanics and made a significant contribution to the understanding of boundary-layer theory, which led to the understanding of skin friction and drag on aircraft wings.
