From the Latin praecipitatio meaning ‘I fall’, a supplementary cloud feature in which precipitation from the cloud base falls to the ground. The feature is usually seen with cumulus, cumulonimbus, stratus, stratocumulus, altostratus, and nimbostratus. See also cloud classification.
