The movement of people from one place to another, usually from one country to another. Green et al. (2008) NZ Geogr. 64, 1 observe that the ‘push–pull’ model incompletely describes the motivations of those who migrate, and who are not necessarily either pushed or pulled, but motivated by things like a desire for a change, or for more adventure. Hugo (2006), Geogr. Res. 44, 2 shows how increasing gradients of difference between nations in the pattern of growth in the workforce, in income and poverty levels, and in governance have been important drivers of emigration. In a study of emigration from rural Albania, Vullnetari and King (2008) Glob. Netwks 8, 1 remind us that migration statistics are about real people.
