Land plants, including those from which all later terrestrial groups are descended. Gene sequences and comparative morphology suggest land plants form a monophyletic group, descended from Charophyceae. Embryophyte fossils occur in rocks of middle Ordovician (Llanvirn, about 470 Ma ago) age.
