A Russian meteorological satellite that was launched into geostationary orbit from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, on 20 January 2011, carried on a Zenit rocket. Designed to remain operational for ten years, Elektro-L provides data to help with weather forecasting, analysis of ocean conditions, and monitoring of space ‘weather’.
