If it is reasonable to assume that the variances of two populations that you wish to compare are equal, then the most discriminatory test available uses a single estimate of the common variance and uses all of the available data from the two samples. The pooled estimate s_p is given by

$s_{p}^{2} = \frac{\sum_{i = 1}^{n_{X}} {(x_{i} - \bar{x})}^{2} + \sum_{j = 1}^{n_{Y}} {(y_{j} - \bar{y})}^{2}}{n_{X} + n_{Y} - 2}$

where {x_i}, {y_j} are the two sets of sample observations with sample sizes n_X, n_Y respectively and sample means $\bar{x}, \bar{y}$ .
