with a special interest in Bayesian inference. Efron graduated in mathematics from Caltech in 1960. In 1964 he obtained his PhD at Stanford U, where he joined the faculty. He was elected a member of the AAAS in 1983 and of the NAS in 1985. He was President of the IMS in 1988. He was awarded the Wilks Award of the ASA in 1990, and was its President in 2004. He was the IMS Rietz Lecturer in 1977 and the Wald Lecturer in 1981. In 1996 he was COPSS Fisher Lecturer. He was awarded the Parzen Prize in 1998 and the Rao Prize in 2003. He was awarded the National Medal of Science in 2007.
