An English rebellion in Cornwall and Devon, at the same time as Kett’s Rebellion in Norfolk. The West Country rebels’ main grievance was the imposition, by Act of Uniformity, of the first Book of Common Prayer in English. Demanding that no such religious changes should be made until Edward VI came of age, they laid siege to Exeter on 2 July. It was not until mid‐August that government troops under Lord Russell scattered them, killing some 4000. The leaders were executed in London; lesser rebels were hanged throughout the West Country.
