In China, ecocompensation describes any kind of payment that reflects the environmental impact by those who manage, maintain, or conserve a watershed that provides valuable environmental services. For example, Han et al. (2012) Chin. Geogra. Sci. 22, 1, 119–26 calculate an economic value for the loss of wetlands using remote sensing, field investigations, and department visits to survey wetland types, assess wetland area changes, and calculate wetland economic value. Market-value loss and ecological function-value loss caused by reduction of the wetland area and environmental pollution are calculated using market valuations, ecological valuation, environmental protection investment cost analysis, and outcome parameters.
