Astronomy
  • The direction perpendicular to a given plane, such as the plane of the Earth’s equator or the plane of the ecliptic. For a rotating body, the poles lie at the ends of the body’s axis of rotation. See also celestial pole; ecliptic pole; galactic pole.


Science and Technology
  • 1. One of two fixed points on the surface of a rotating body that represent the ends of the body’s axis of rotation. A straight line joining the poles and passing through the centre of the body intersects the body’s equatorial plane at right angles.

    2. The two ends, conventionally labelled north and south, of a dipole magnet. The Earth’s magnetic poles are where the lines of the Earth’s magnetic field point vertically downwards.
