1. One of two fixed points on the surface of a rotating body that represent the ends of the body’s axis of rotation. A straight line joining the poles and passing through the centre of the body intersects the body’s equatorial plane at right angles.

2. The two ends, conventionally labelled north and south, of a dipole magnet. The Earth’s magnetic poles are where the lines of the Earth’s magnetic field point vertically downwards.
