  • An equation relating the volume flow rate, V, of a fluid through a cylindrical tube to the pressure difference, p, between the ends of the tube: V=π‎pr4/8lη‎, where r is the radius and l the length of the tube; η‎ is the viscosity of the fluid. It applies if the Reynolds number is less than 2000 and was first stated by Jean Louis Poiseuille (1799–1869) in the 1840s.


Chemical Engineering
  • A relationship used to determine the rate of flow of a fluid with laminar flow through a horizontal cylindrical tube or pipe. Named after French physician and physiologist Jean Louis Marie Poiseuille (1797–1869), it is given by

    where μ is the viscosity of the fluid, Δp/L is the pressure drop along the tube, and R is the internal radius of the tube.
